One of the interesting phenomenon of our time is the resurgence of interest around the world in “spirituality”.  What makes this phenomenon interesting is the observation that even those who find religions to be overbearing or are vehemently opposed to “organized religions” are open to and seek spirituality. Many of us have come across people who would say, “I am not religious but I am spiritual.” The concept of spirituality divorced from any particular theological/religious system started to gain momentum from the early 1990s. There are differences of opinion among the experts as to the exact relationship between spirituality and religion. Many are of the opinion that spirituality and religions are interchangeable. Others view religions as “containers” that hold spirituality. Some of the most prominent opinions are illustrated below:

“Some contend that religion is the more inclusive concept, with spirituality as its major focus… Others contend that spirituality is the more inclusive term of which religion and religiousness may or may not be a part.”

Irrespective of what one may believe about spirituality and how it relates to religion, it has become mainstream to acknowledge the healing effects of spirituality on the mind, body, soul as well as the overall individual and collective well being. Various medical research were conducted that established positive links between spirituality and longevity, less stress, less risky behavior and overall increased satisfaction in life.

At Al-Rawiya Foundation we respect all spiritual traditions and promote empowerment of women through spirituality. We are deeply committed to unearthing the spirituality often hidden within religious traditions. We also welcome the opportunity to learn about spirituality from different religious and non-religious traditions to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
